Singapore: The Place That First Taught Me to Dream Again…

There are places you visit, and then there are places that quietly change the direction of your life.
For me, that place is Singapore.
The first time I visited Singapore was shortly after the pandemic. It was also my very first international trip. Looking back now, I realize I wasn’t just traveling to see a new country—I was trying to heal. My heart was carrying the weight of disappointment, and I convinced myself that perhaps a change of scenery could help me find pieces of myself again.
As I wandered through the city, I found myself constantly looking around in amazement. Everything felt so different from what I had known. The trains arrived on time, the transport system was seamless, the streets were remarkably clean, and there was a sense of order that made even a first-time visitor feel comfortable. I remember thinking how safe it felt to walk around, whether during the day or late into the evening.
But beyond the modern skyline and efficient transportation, something unexpected happened.
A quiet dream began to take shape.
As I sat in parks, explored neighborhoods, and watched people go about their daily lives, a thought kept returning to me:
“What if one day, I could build a life here?”
At the time, it felt like an impossible dream. I had no concrete plans—just a hopeful heart that dared to imagine a different future. I told myself that one day I wanted to study in Singapore, experience life beyond being a tourist, and hopefully build a career in a country that had already inspired me in such a short visit.
Years passed.
Life continued to unfold in ways I never expected.
Then, in 2025, that quiet dream became reality.
I found myself returning to Singapore—not as a tourist this time, but as an international student. Walking the same streets felt completely different because they were no longer just places I wanted to visit; they had become part of my everyday life. The MRT stations that once amazed me became part of my daily commute. The cafés I admired became places where I studied, reflected, and dreamed about what comes next.
Sometimes we think travel is only about discovering new places. But every once in a while, a destination does something much more meaningful—it awakens a dream you didn’t know you were allowed to have.
Singapore became that place for me.
It reminded me that healing doesn’t always happen all at once. Sometimes it begins with a single journey, a quiet walk through unfamiliar streets, and a dream that gently whispers, “Maybe one day.”
And sometimes, if you keep showing up and believing, that “one day” becomes your reality.
This is only the beginning of my Singapore story. In another article, I’ll share what it has been like to study, grow, and build a new chapter of my life as an international student in this city that once existed only in my dreams.
